Judith Moule

Judith Moule is an artist who works in both acrylic and oils and, more recently, working in cold oil and cold wax medium. Her subject matter is land/seascapes they are both atmospheric and evocative. She may use photos for colour reference or small sketches for composition, but generally relies on memory and emotional responses drawn from the landscape she is referencing.
Judith takes a critical approach to her work refining and resolving the painting, whilst striving to keep the energy of the marks. She aims to evoke a human experience of the land, rather than its physical presence.

Judith says,’As an artist I am often asked the question “what inspires your work?” My paintings are a statement about the surfaces of landscapes, particularly those of New Zealand and Australia, so my artworks are abstracted from nature. They are personal responses to the visual forms, colours, textures and atmospheres of the landscapes that I work in.
I work in oils and cold wax medium, and also in acrylic and mixed media.
I build several layers of paint, drawn marks, and add visual or physical textures in the form of organic shapes depicting landscape surfaces. This
allows me to see what is working, so that I can expand and develop my ideas, eventually forming a visual dialogue. The emergence of previously
hidden imagery and flashes of colour can be achieved by various methods, scraping back, transparencies, and solvent reductions and other methods. This is an exciting process and I enjoy the aspect of allowing the interaction of spontaneity and control, adding energy to the painting. .
As the painting develops, I take a more critical approach refining and resolving, whilst striving to keep the energy of the marks. I would like to think that my work evokes a human experience of the land, rather than its physical presence, which is my offering to the viewer.
