Gill Pitt

Born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), I grew up and attended school there before moving to the UK in 1977 to study Fine Art at Reading University. After completing a PGCE, I pursued a career in primary school teaching while continuing to develop my artistic practice. Further studies at West Dean College in West Sussex deepened my engagement with materials and process.
My work is inspired by the landscapes I explore on daily walks with my dog — through changing seasons, weather, and location. These experiences form the foundation of my practice. I record my observations through drawings and studies, either directly in the landscape or through responses to the sensations and memories that remain afterwards.
In the studio, these collected impressions evolve into mixed media abstracted landscapes, where experimentation and discovery are central to my process. Each piece reflects both a sense of place and the emotional resonance of being within it.
